Poha Panchakajjaya

 

 
Poha Panchakajjaya is a speciality of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka. Naivedhya means an offering to the God. Pancha means five and Kajjaya means sweets, a naivedhya which is prepared with five main ingredients. Beaten Rice, Coconut, Jaggery, Black Sesame seeds and ghee are most important ones and rest ingredients are optional.

This recipe doesn’t need any special occasion. It is a simple recipe perfect for children and can be served as a snack too.
 
 
 
Here are the ingredients used …..

INGREDIENTS :
 
(1) Poha / Pressed rice – 1 cup
(2) Phula hua dhan / Puffed paddy – 3/4 cup
(3) Freshly Grated Coconut – 3/4 cup
(4) Jaggery/Gud – 75 gms – half cup
(5) Black Sesame Seeds / Til – 1 teaspoon
(6) Cardamom / Elaichi powder – half teaspoon
(7) Ghee – 1 teaspoon
(8) Sugar cane pieces (Optional) – Handful
 
Poha / Pressed Rice
Phula hua dhan / Puffed paddy
Freshly grated coconut
Jaggery / Gud
Black Sesame Seeds / Til
Cardamom / Elaichi powder
All ingredients gathered
 
Here is the method.

METHOD :

(1) Clean and sieve pressed rice well so that any powder or dust is removed.
 
(2) Clean and roast black sesame seed for a minute till you get a nice aroma.
 
 
Roasted Black Sesame Seeds
 
(3) Powder cardamom, grate coconut and Jaggery. I used readymade powder of Cardamom.

(4) Take a deep vessel. In it, add grated coconut and jaggery and mix well until soft mixture is formed.

(5) Add poha/pressed rice and mix well till all pressed rice are well mixed with Jaggery and coconut.

(6) Add Puffed Paddy, Cardamom powder and Black Sesame seeds and mix well with the mixture in step 5.

(7) Add a spoonful of Ghee (Clarified butter) and mix well.

(8) Add sugar cane pieces and mix again.

The Poha Panchakajjaya is ready!

Serve in a serving bowl.
